We asked an expert in the field of endurance coaching, Coach Laura Henry, this question:
"Athletic tattoos can serve so many purposes. The most common purposes they serve are to:
- Remind an athlete about their "why" behind why they're pursuing the goal that they've set while they are in the "grind" of working toward that goal
- To commemorate a significant accomplishment that the athlete has achieved (such as finishing an IRONMAN, running in the Boston Marathon, or qualifying for Team USA)
- To visually display an activity or thing that has grown beyond being something that the athlete is just doing into part of who the athlete is as a person"
Again, we turned to our resident endurance coach to answer this question:
"Athletes come into sport for so many reasons. Some people are naturally competitive and athletics provides them with a space to channel that competitiveness into. Other people want to see what they can personally achieve. And for still other people, athletics serves as a form of healing from challenging chapters of life such as addiction, cancer diagnosis, divorce, or the death of a loved one. Athletic tattoos serve as not only a outward visible display that the athlete can share with others, but as a deeply personal reminder of who they are, how far they've come, and the pride that they have in what they've achieved."

"Ironically, self-defeating thoughts want to be defeated. Face them. Question them. Expose them to your light...and it'll knock their lights out."
